Meet Deb – Turning a Love of Flowers into a Lifelong Career

From the moment she first peered into a flower shop window, Deb was hooked. The colours, the textures, the creativity, it all spoke to her.“ I always had a love for flowers,” she remembers. “As a young person, I was drawn to florists and knew that’s what I wanted to do.”

Deb wasted no time chasing that dream. Straight after her final year at school, she began a full-time traineeship, working by day and studying floristry by night. Three years later, armed with hands-on experience and a deep understanding of the craft, Deb’s professional path flourished!

Over the years, Deb has worked in some of Sydney’s most respected florists, from the elegant Scott’s Florist in Sutherland, to the high-end world of Searls Florist in the Hunter Connection, creating blooms for top corporate clients. She’s also brought beauty to local favourites like Engadine Florist, Bulli Florist, and Caringbah Florist, learning from and collaborating with some of the best in the industry.

It’s clear Deb was never destined for a desk job. “I once worked in Government Stores doing office work, but I found it hard to stay seated all day. Floristry gave me the chance to move, create, and bring joy through flowers.”

Weddings, in particular, hold a special place in her heart. From delicate bouquets to grand arbours, every couple’s celebration is a new creative adventure. “Every wedding is unique, and being part of such a special day is a real privilege,” she says.

Deb’s career has been full of “pinch-me” moments. She recalls leading Pearsons students in creating an installation with world-renowned floral designer John Emmanuel for a wedding expo, and the thrill of seeing their work carried down the runway in the hands of models wearing designer gowns. She’s even had the chance to teach Jennifer Morrison, the wife of Australia’s Prime Minister, and share a dinner at Kirribilli House.

These days, Deb pours her passion into teaching at Pearsons School of Floristry. “The biggest learning curve in my career has been realising just how many people want to become florists,” she says. “Being able to guide them and watch them bloom is incredibly rewarding.”

Her advice to anyone considering floristry? “Follow your dreams. Nothing is too hard to achieve.”

At Pearsons, we’re lucky to have trainers like Deb, industry professionals who not only teach the art of floristry but inspire students to turn their passion into a fulfilling career.
