What IF you took the leap and started on your floral journey?

IF THE FLORIST, was founded by Ivan Ferreira, a graduate of Pearson School, who has created a stunning floral oasis in Maroubra. IF is a tribute to Ivan's full name and sparks curiosity about the possibilities it holds. We took a moment to reconnected with Ivan, reminiscing about his time at our school, the experience and skills he acquired, and celebrating his accomplishments. Let his story inspire you to ask your self, what if I let my passion bloom?
How has life changed for you since completing the course?

Since completing the course at Pearsons School in 2017, my life has changed a lot. I worked for different florists around Sydney, and 5 years ago, I started my own florist business, If The Florist, in Maroubra Beach, Sydney. We offer various services, including flower retailing, delivery, weddings, events, and workshops. The skills and knowledge I gained during the course and my experiences have been instrumental in building my business and growing it into a well-known name in the community. In 2022, we won the 'Business of the Year' award from Randwick City Council, which was a proud moment for us.

Have you always wanted to work in Floristry, if not how did floristry come about for you?

Originally from Brazil, events have always been a part of my life. When I moved to Australia in 2014 at 20 years old, I wanted to specialise in something I love. With this idea in mind, I found Pearsons School and fell in love with floristry. Floristry became a perfect blend of my interests in interior design, nature, business, creativity, events, and decoration, and I've never looked back since.

What was it about Pearsons School that made you want to study with us?

The strong reputation, comprehensive curriculum, and experienced professionals made it the perfect choice.

What did you love about studying the ‘SFL30115 Certificate III in Floristry’ with Pearsons School?

I loved the hands-on learning approach at Pearsons School. The teachers were knowledgeable and passionate, making the classes engaging. Making friends for life in the classes was a great opportunity as we still help each other nowadays.

Did you take on any work experience opportunities during your study at Pearsons, and if so what were they?

Yes, during my first term (hand-tied), I sought work experience and was lucky enough to get a job working on events and big corporate jobs with GARLANDS by Ferdinando Freitas, a past Pearsons student. It was incredible and gave me practical experience that was invaluable for my career and helped my performance during the course.

What projects/floristry work are you most excited about or would love to work on now that you’ve finished your course?

I love working with weddings and events where clients appreciate my style and vision. It allows me to have total control over the overall look, which I find incredibly rewarding. Working with fun briefs, vibrant colours, and different textures is always exciting. Additionally, I enjoy sharing my skills through workshops, which have been a fulfilling experience and a great way to connect with others who share my passion for floristry.

How have you found searching for and securing work in the industry?

Initially, it was quite easy to find work as I started with a work experience position that led to a job offer. However, the real challenge was advancing my career and building my skills and experience. Persistence, dedication, and a commitment to providing high-quality service have been crucial in helping me build a loyal customer base and establish a strong market presence.

What have you learned about floristry since leaving the classroom and working in the industry?

Since leaving the classroom, I’ve learned that floristry is as much about business skills as it is about creativity. Understanding customer needs, managing supplies, and delivering excellent service are crucial. I’ve also learned the importance of staying updated with industry trends and continuously improving my skills to provide innovative and beautiful floral arrangements.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to get into floristry?

Be passionate and persistent. Floristry is demanding but very rewarding. Learn the basics, seek hands-on experience, and always strive to provide exceptional service and most important, BE ORIGINAL! Remember, hard work pays off – like for us, winning the Business of the Year award was a proud moment that validated our dedication and efforts.
