Bringing Art to Life: Floristry Students Take on the Shop Order Assignment

Our floristry students were recently tasked with Pearsons unique assignment known as “Shop Order” and it’s safe to say, they rose to the occasion with flair and finesse.

The Brief

The assignment was based on a real-world scenario: a local art gallery requested a floral arrangement for the opening night of their newest exhibition. The arrangement was to be placed at the reception desk to greet guests as they arrived, setting the tone for the evening and complementing the showcased art.

But this wasn’t just any arrangement. The students were asked to go beyond aesthetics – the flowers needed to reflect the essence of the artist and the artwork featured in the exhibition. This called for thoughtful interpretation, design innovation, and skilled execution.

Real-World Learning

This assignment wasn’t just about creativity, it challenged students to work within the practical constraints of a professional florist’s brief. From budgeting and sourcing to concept development and client satisfaction, the “Shop Order” offered invaluable industry experience.

Each student approached the brief in their own unique way, choosing artwork that inspired them and selecting flowers that echoed its color palette, texture, or emotion. The final arrangements were as diverse as the art itself – bold, soft, structured, wild – but all shared a common thread: thoughtful storytelling through flowers.

In the Classroom, from Market to Masterpiece

As part of the assignment, students began their creative journey with an early morning trip to the flower markets, selecting blooms that best captured the essence of their chosen artwork. Back in the classroom, they set to work designing and constructing their arrangements, carefully balancing technique, creativity, and the client's brief.

The assignment culminated in a classroom photoshoot, where each piece was styled and professionally photographed. This final step not only showcased the students’ finished designs but also gave them valuable experience in presenting their work for portfolios and future clients.

A Blooming Success

We are incredibly proud of how our students embraced the “Shop Order” challenge. Their ability to interpret art through floristry, work within a set budget, and deliver a polished, gallery-ready product demonstrates the depth of talent and dedication in our floristry program.

As our students continue to grow their skills and creativity, we can’t wait to see where their next floral adventure takes them.
